Fernando J. Martinez, MD, MS, is a Professor in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor. Dr. Martinez is the Medical Director of the Lung Volume Reduction Program and Pulmonary Diagnostic Services, and also Co-Medical Director of Lung Transplantation. In addition, he is Director of the Cough/Dyspnea Clinic in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Martinez received his medical degree from the University of Florida School of Medicine in Gainesville, where he was valedictorian of his class. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and his fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Boston University Pulmonary Center. Dr. Martinez has also completed a Master's Degree program in Biostatistics and Clinical Study Design at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Dr. Martinez is a member of several medical organizations, including the American Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society, and the American College of Chest Physicians. He has been a member of the American Thoracic Society committees generating guidelines for the management of COPD, respiratory infections, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Dr. Martinez is currently the Chair of the Clinical Problems Assembly of the American Thoracic Society. He is a reviewer for Chest, New England Journal of Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, European Respiratory Journal and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and the Journal of COPD, both of which he is a member of the editorial board. Dr. Martinez is an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. He is the author or coauthor of numerous articles for journals, such as the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, Chest, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and European Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Dr. Martinez has also written several chapters for textbooks, including A Practical Approach to Pulmonary Medicine, published by Lippincott-Raven, and Emergency Care of the Woman, published by McGraw-Hill.
